Unplugged (Deshawn Flaire Exposed #7) - The Struggle

Hey guys. Just wanna chat with you all and share my thoughts. I think it’s fair to give you my highs and lows, equally. I’m human. We all are.

A lot of musicians have been dreaming the big dream since childhood. I’ve only been dreaming since 20. I often have my doubts…probably more often than the those I mentioned. I feel like Rock Lee (from Naruto- the only member of the village who doesn’t use ninjutsu or genjutsu); no advantage at all. But believe me, I work HARD (I like to think I do, at least) as he does. Every song is a product of doubt being overcome. I guess that’s kind of why there are times where I never listen to my music, and times where I ONLY listen to my music. I’m still growing, which would explain any inconsistency. There are plenty times where I wanna quit…but that’s out of the question for me. I’m always reminded to keep going…usually from someone who really admires my work.

When I’m not doing music or waiting tables (it pays the bills), I’m trying to plan shows for other musicians I enjoy under the name “HIGH HONORS.” I love local music.

Really…I just want y’all to love my music.

Unplugged (Deshawn Flaire Exposed #6) - Knowing Your Rights

Hey everyone. Police brutality has been the center of attention this year. We all have an obligation to our community to stand up for one another (think “my brother’s keeper). Although I’m not able to physically support ever protest against social injustice, I thought I’d make my contribution here, and I hope you share this with others as YOUR contribution.

A lot of police think they can get away with abusing their authority over our rights, but it’s not their obligation to tell us what those rights are. It’s our job to educate ourselves. I’ll be honest - I didn’t know I had the right to exercise some of the things I read and with this knowledge, you too, can avoid being taken advantage of. I’ll spare the politically correct mumbo-jumbo and display the most apparent (all equally important) rights we ignore to exercise.

FOURTH AMENDMENT

This amendment prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures and requires any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause.

THIS EXTENDS TO:

  • A law enforcement officer’s physical apprehension or “seizure” of a person, by way of a stop or arrest; and
  • Police searches of places and items in which an individual has a legitimate expectation of privacy — his or her person, clothing, purse, luggage, vehicle, house, apartment, hotel room, and place of business, to name a few examples.

A FEW SITUATIONS:

  • An individual is stopped for police questioning while walking down the street.
  • An individual is pulled over for a minor traffic infraction, and the police officer searches the vehicle’s trunk.
  • An individual is arrested.
  • Police officers enter an individual’s house to place him or her under arrest.
  • Police officers enter an individual’s apartment to search for evidence of crime.
  • Police officers enter a corporation’s place of business to search for evidence of crime.
  • Police officers confiscate an individual’s vehicle or personal property and place it under police control.

ONLY PERMISSIBLE WITH:

  • A valid search warrant;
  • A valid arrest warrant; or
  • A belief rising to the level of “probable cause” that an individual has committed a crime.

YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO DENY CONSENT!

I thought this post might be helpful for those of you who have encountered such situations. Stay informed.

Unplugged (Deshawn Flaire Exposed #5) - Domo Wilson

Another week…ya know. Thanks for reading. This past weekend, I was blessed to be introduced to internet sensation, Domo Wilson. This young girl, who has only been regularly posting videos for about 8 months, has gained 1 MILLION FOLLOWERS. Now that’s pretty impressive. I was able to help her with a couple shows she recently had and even DJ her last one. It was hella cool, man. We took photos, performed together and had a great time. I was FREAKING tired after that night!! This was cool, though. S/O to her, Colin, Sam and Corrine for our spontaneous musical moment.

Next up…High Honors: Summer Session.

Unplugged (Deshawn Flaire Exposed #4) - Support Local Artists!

What’s going on, y’all?! Y’all still reading this? Goooood! As I travel this road of making music in my city, I come across a LOT of others who share the same dream; most of em TERRIBLE, some not too bad. Every now and then I come across a couple artists who have great star power, and I wanna show some love to them in this post.

Angel Davanport - Gotta love her. In my opinion, she’s got the most star potential on this list. She raps, she sings, she writes. Hard worker. She even got a nice opportunity collaborating with Tech9 on his last joint. Personally, one of the coolest people I’ve been blessed to meet (& collab with) and even though the group thing didn’t work out I still keep her in mind for future adventures.

Nick Astro - I’ve been sharing the hallways with this kid for a small minute at Columbia College, casually speaking whenever we crossed paths and even sharing the stage at a gig. He’s been really doing his thing in the last year and I’m proud of the kid. Dope artist. Great dude. #LightSkinWithThatAfro

Defcee - Sorry, but I’ve never (and probably never will) call him that. Adam Levin, his real name, is a huge inspiration to me doing music. He’s one of the best live performers I know and this guy is literally a hermit (we’re roommates) when he’s not teaching spoken word workshops. He’s got some great work coming underway that’s gonna blow.

Saba - I’ve know Sab for as long as I’ve known Adam, probably longer. It’s literally amazing to see him (and others) grow over the last 6 years (we’ve been promising each other a collab for a minute…long overdue). Just put out a MONSTER projectthat’s bound to catch attention from some important people. Congrats on making it to front face of Chicago’s up-n-coming.

Via Rosa - A new artist, in my opinion, who recently made my favorite “local artists” list. Her “DeathViaLove” joint was so good I played it out the first 2 weeks (it was cracking on the ‘net). I really appreciate her for joining the High Honors 2.0 bill and will DEFINITELY look to work with her more in the future.

There are plenty other artists that I will save for a later post, but these guys are some of the first to come to mind when I look at my playlist of local musicians. Chicago’s music scene, regardless of genre, is very rich and full of gemstones.

Support local artists!! get out and find a show!!

Operation: Fund My Music | Facebook →

I’m calling ALL of my friends/supporters to help me on this elaborate (but not original. This has been done before.) idea to help raise money for Part III in my High Honors series. ..And why not kill 2 birds with one stone by getting my music some extra plays! Here’s how you can help:

  1. Download the FREE music streaming site, SPOTIFY (on laptop/desktop).
  2. Search for me (Deshawn Flaire) and my single, “Bruce Leeroy.”
  3. Play (& SHARE after).
  4. Set playback to REPEAT, MUTE and let the magic take place (Do this while you’re sleep or at work or whatever).

The more plays I get, the more money I get. Simple, right? All I need is the support from you. Let’s make this show happen!
