What’s going on, y’all?! Y’all still reading this? Goooood! As I travel this road of making music in my city, I come across a LOT of others who share the same dream; most of em TERRIBLE, some not too bad. Every now and then I come across a couple artists who have great star power, and I wanna show some love to them in this post.
Angel Davanport - Gotta love her. In my opinion, she’s got the most star potential on this list. She raps, she sings, she writes. Hard worker. She even got a nice opportunity collaborating with Tech9 on his last joint. Personally, one of the coolest people I’ve been blessed to meet (& collab with) and even though the group thing didn’t work out I still keep her in mind for future adventures.
Nick Astro - I’ve been sharing the hallways with this kid for a small minute at Columbia College, casually speaking whenever we crossed paths and even sharing the stage at a gig. He’s been really doing his thing in the last year and I’m proud of the kid. Dope artist. Great dude. #LightSkinWithThatAfro
Defcee - Sorry, but I’ve never (and probably never will) call him that. Adam Levin, his real name, is a huge inspiration to me doing music. He’s one of the best live performers I know and this guy is literally a hermit (we’re roommates) when he’s not teaching spoken word workshops. He’s got some great work coming underway that’s gonna blow.
Saba - I’ve know Sab for as long as I’ve known Adam, probably longer. It’s literally amazing to see him (and others) grow over the last 6 years (we’ve been promising each other a collab for a minute…long overdue). Just put out a MONSTER projectthat’s bound to catch attention from some important people. Congrats on making it to front face of Chicago’s up-n-coming.
Via Rosa - A new artist, in my opinion, who recently made my favorite “local artists” list. Her “DeathViaLove” joint was so good I played it out the first 2 weeks (it was cracking on the ‘net). I really appreciate her for joining the High Honors 2.0 bill and will DEFINITELY look to work with her more in the future.
There are plenty other artists that I will save for a later post, but these guys are some of the first to come to mind when I look at my playlist of local musicians. Chicago’s music scene, regardless of genre, is very rich and full of gemstones.
Support local artists!! get out and find a show!!
